Timing Automatic Time Tracker App Reviews

Excellent

It’s the only thing out there that gives me this information with uploading it somewhere (privacy, please) or trying to be something else. Thank you.

Timing is straight up amazing.

If you need to keep track of time and you’re as terrible as I am at actually keeping track of time, then do yourself a favor and get this app. It’s seriously streamlined the hell out of my freelancing. It makes breaking down and optimizing my workflow dead simple whether in the middle of a project or long after it’s done. Easily the best purchase I’ve made from the App Store. Easily.

Freelancers best friend!

I LOVE your product! For freelancers with many clients it’s a lifesaver. And I REALLY LOVE the new super useful ‘Per Hour’ tracking view AND the ‘Remind me to review my activity’ - which I will use daily! Basically this will remind me to review my work day & with the ‘hour view’ Ill add ‘custom activity’ items for the few but important apps that don’t provide (any tracker app) their doc titles (like FCPX & Messages)! Like I’ve said before… I do a ton of freelance media editing work using Photoshop, FCPX, Logic Pro X and web site design apps… Half my gigs are billed by the job and half are by the hour. I often am interupted or jump from job to job and Timing does an amazing job tracking my efforts! (And Timings doesn’t require a monthly subscription or sending MY app use data to some companies server like so many other trackers.. blagh!) Timings even tracks which web address I worked on so when I do a Wordpress site it’s good for this as well. I really never write reviews but after trying many other app trackers nothing came close, so I love this app!!!

With every update this app keeps getting better and better! It’s one of my Top 10 Mac Utilties. Over the last 30 years of using a Mac I’ve tried a plethora of different time tracking applications, and without a doubt, Timing is my favorite one. I love that it’s unobtrusive (if you want it to be) yet very detailed in it’s collection of data about what apps and documents you are using. I love that I don’t have to “start tracking” like so many other time tracking apps make you do. If you do contract work (or just need to track what youre doing at work), and don’t want to always be bothered by having to remember to hit a start button, then Timing is for you. I love that it just tracks my app usage, and documents that I’ve worked on. A great example is that I can go to Chrome or Safari tracking info in Timing, and see when I was goofing off vs. working by looking at the web sites I visited and how long I spent there. I also like that I can have it prompt me when I’m in between using and app, or away from the computer, and asking me what I was up to. This is great as I don’t have to hit a stop tracking button, give it a reason, and then resume tracking. It just does it for me. There really isn’t another Mac app that does as good of a job at tracking my computer usage as Timing. I tip my

By far the best that’s out there

I’ve been using Timing for several years now, and there is very little I’d change…I’ve also had the best experience with help when I’ve run into a problem - they are quick to answer questions and provide suggestions. I spend a lot of time on different websites modifying, tweaking and adding things - I love the fact that I can track my time for my clients this way. Recently Quickbooks Online made a change to the url display and I can no longer track which companies I’m spending my time on - I hope that Daniel and Thomas can come up with a solution for this as this is the other half of my business and I do need to track that activity as well. The most valuable part of this app is the fact that I have been able to cleary see what are my time wasters - how much time I spend on email (that I really wasn’t able to charge my clients for accurately) and social media sites. Since I offer social media promotion it helps me identify which clients I can attribute to the online portion of my work. They have truly helped me run my business more streamlined and organized. I recommend it to all of my clients.

Simple automatic time tracker

I really like this time tracker because it does what I need without all the bells and whistles that I don’t need, and it does it automatically. Once or twice a day, I just add my project, if necessary, to the list of projects and move activities into it. Also, it’s smart enough to move many activities automatically, once I’ve moved a few key ones. I wish it would distinguish the use of Word’s spell checker by different projects, though.

Incredibly useful for freelancers

For someone who works on multiple clients/projects, Timing is amazing when pulling together timesheets — can identify tasks by app, directory, etc. and have them automatically categorized

Great for Tracking Application Usage… Almost there for tracking your working day in total

This has automated the task of tracking exactly what I do, or rather what my applications are doing, in any given day, week or any span of time. The granualarity to separate out time spent on e-mail by contact is very useful. Most apps also include document level tracking which is helpful for say, isolating time spent on financial planning vs. forecasting vs. other when using Excel. Or time spent with sales vs. engineering vs. customer when using Mail. The only catch is capturing time spent in meetings. It appears that iCal and BusyCal don’t provide, or Timings doesn’t capture calendar schedule detail, nor would that be reported by the OS since it appears to track only the application that is open with focus (via accessibility). As most users, I would wager, multitask or have many different applications open during meetings; it’s hard to capture the time appropriately. Would be substantially more useful if the application could add scheduled items on the calendar to a meeting category (regardless of application focus). Or the option to track a backgrounded application. Automating this through calendar integration would be ideal. As an alternative, It is helpful that Timings has a data export feature so that I can combine meeting schedule and other items to the collective data and report externally. It also has a menu bar option to add a manual entry. But this relies on manual intervention on what is otherwise completely automated. With some additional features for tracking time via calendar integration, Timings could be a one stop shop for time tracking. Thanks for developing such a great product. All in all, well worth the money.

It’s ok for a free app

The app does exacltly what it claims, though it takes a lot of time to compile the data it records into useful information. This app also seems to run really slow on my computer when I’m trying to recap and organize my tracking data. On the plus side, it records everything you’re doing and has helpful screens and organizing functions. If you’re using it for persona tracking, it might be ok, but for invoicing and work-related tracking, I would try something better.

Very little it doesnt cover for me

I have clients and project managers who use the little click to start/stop timers and iIve tried several of them in the past and all failed miserably. if iI were able to start on a project and never get interupted by the phone or email, theyd probably work, but thats never the case. What iI really like is that items can be tracked for multiple projects... but even better certain apps even list individual windows and iI can then add those up daily to make sure that iIm covering everything for one client or another, including drafting emails! for example, i use outlook for mac for my email, and each window gets tracked. at the end of the day, click on all the windows for a particular client and it adds up the time in the bottom of the window for me. no more guessing if iI spent two hours in email today, how much of it was client A, client B, etc... Same things goes for sites I visit often for research or support... I catch them all in the same bucket, and then can click all the ones relevant to a certain project to add up that time for the day. great stuff. The only thing it doesnt do is track within single-window apps for distinct channels, for example, in Slack. Since a few clients are tracking time I spend there too, I just leave one in the main window, and others within site-specific browser windows so that everyone has their own unique time tracked. All in all, Timings tracks EVERYTHING I do and then lets me decide how to use the log. cant think of anything right now that would be changed in my view.

significant improvements

I have been using the Pro version for over four years now. The new 1.7 is evidently faster, more stable, and improved.

Also helpful for self-productivity

In addition to time tracking for projects/clients, Timing is a *great* tool if you wonder “where has my day gone, why haven’t I accomplished anything?” Not only does it show you detailed breakdown of whether you were in your email, randomly surfing the web, or doing productivity work, the timeline per hour of how much you were on your computer helps you break down external distractions that keep you away from your computer, e.g., I might only get 5 minutes of productivity time in the noon hour, and I now know this and can optimize around it. Best of all, it takes only a few moments to wire up; it’s really a “set and forget” until you want to dig into your time. Really happy with this purchase. Highly recommended.

Pretty good, but no time stamping/sorting

I’ve been using this app for a year or so now and like it, but getting useful data out of it can be challenging. There is *NO* facility for figuring out what time of day you were working on something; yes, you can narrow it down to “I worked in this app for x amount of time during this hour-long slot”, but really, I often need to know what time of day I was working on something, and narrowing it down to the hour would be very useful. Seems to me, activities should be time-stamped, and you should be able to sort by time of day; that simply isn’t possible with this app even by exporting the data. This capability exists in a rudimentary fashion in “Time Sink” which has a time of day built into the timeline display - not perfect, but makes it a better fit for my needs. If getting useful data reported in a more user-friendly way existed, I’d give this app 5 stars.
